Fatal Safety Incident at a Construction Site in Robat Karim / One Worker Killed and Another Seriously Injured

According to the Workers’ Health and Safety Advocates News Agency, citing ILNA, a serious workplace accident occurred on Tuesday morning, February 17, at a construction project in Robat Karim, Tehran Province, resulting in the death of one construction worker and severe injuries to another.

Based on initial reports, the incident took place on the sixth floor of a building under construction, where two workers were carrying out routine operations. Due to the collapse of construction debris, reportedly caused by structural instability and insufficient safety measures, both workers were trapped beneath a large volume of soil and construction materials.

As a result of the accident, one of the workers lost his life due to complete burial under the debris and subsequent lack of oxygen to the brain. The second worker sustained serious injuries and was trapped under the rubble until rescue teams arrived.

Following the incident, emergency medical services (EMS 115) and Red Crescent rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. Rescue personnel managed to pull the injured worker out from under the debris and, given his critical condition, promptly transferred him to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

⚠️ HSE Perspective and Preventive Measures

Occupational health and safety (HSE) experts emphasize that debris collapses at construction sites are often the result of inadequate risk assessment, improper structural support, lack of continuous supervision, and failure to comply with safety regulations related to work at height. This incident once again highlights the urgent need for:

  • Comprehensive risk assessments prior to construction activities
  • Proper shoring and structural stabilization systems
  • Continuous presence of a qualified HSE officer at construction sites
  • Regular safety training for workers, particularly regarding work at height and debris-collapse hazards

.

Authorities have announced that investigations are underway to determine the root causes of the incident and identify any potential negligence by contractors or site managers.
