Worker’s Quick Safety Response Prevents Potential Gas Explosion in Mashhad

Following a structural collapse at a construction site in Mashhad, the swift and responsible action of a construction worker in controlling a natural gas leak prevented what could have become a serious explosion in a residential area.

According to ILNA, on the evening of June 8, during excavation operations at a construction site on Toos Boulevard in Mashhad, part of a neighboring building collapsed, resulting in injuries to three workers present at the site. As a result of the collapse, a section of the city gas pipeline was damaged, causing a gas leak that could have led to a major explosion and significant damage to nearby residential buildings.

Initial reports indicate that one of the injured workers, despite his physical condition, noticed the gas leak and immediately took action to prevent further gas release. Using a scarf, he temporarily covered the outlet of the leaking gas pipe, reducing the spread of gas in the area. This quick response helped prevent a dangerous buildup of gas and provided valuable time for emergency responders to arrive and secure the site.

Fortunately, the incident did not result in any fatalities. Only a middle‑aged woman living in the adjacent building suffered shock due to the incident, and a Samand passenger car sustained damage during the collapse.

Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) experts emphasize that in urban construction projects—especially during excavation activities—strict adherence to safety regulations, proper identification of underground utilities such as gas and water pipelines, and the implementation of risk management and emergency response plans are essential. This incident once again highlights the importance of careful supervision of construction activities and preparedness for emergency situations.
