Advancing green hospitals and healthcare infrastructure preparedness
Bazarganan Hospital's solar power plant and expanded facilities were inaugurated with the Minister of Health and Medical Education, in a project framed around HSE and social responsibility.
Tehran — The Workforce Health and Safety Supporters news outlet reports that Dr. Mohammadreza Zafarghandi attended the inauguration with board members, health-sector benefactors, managers and HSE specialists. The photovoltaic installation and specialist clinic expansions were intended to strengthen infrastructure resilience, sustainable emergency-power preparedness and carbon reduction in healthcare.
Environmental sustainability and public health
Zafarghandi called for healthcare to move from reactive treatment toward prevention and environmental protection. Its responsibility extends beyond clinical and inpatient services to environmental risk control, safety education, active health-risk prevention and emergency preparedness.
He described air pollution as a major epidemiological and environmental-health challenge. The source cites more than 50,000 deaths annually in Iran and more than 700,000 child deaths internationally from polluted air and particulates. It presents pollution control and renewables as public-health necessities, noting Iran's potential from more than 300 sunny days annually.
Energy imbalance and healthcare resilience
Grid instability directly affects sensitive medical equipment. The minister said even small fluctuations or outages can threaten patients in intensive care, coronary care and operating theatres. Rooftop solar can reduce greenhouse gases, manage demand and, in the source's description, support hospital distribution-system stability during emergencies as part of civil-defense preparedness.
Quality, patient safety and management cooperation
Zafarghandi praised cooperation between hospital management, clinical staff and safety and engineering teams. He said a reported 95% patient satisfaction rate reflected both improved treatment standards and safety and respectful service. Cross-departmental cooperation and benefactor involvement can deliver high productivity and quality.
Technical details and the green-hospital model
The technical report describes an on-grid photovoltaic plant rated at 150 kW, with investment exceeding 60 billion rials, equivalent to six billion tomans. High-efficiency panels were installed on the roof. Stated objectives include:
– Supplying the hospital's internal circuit and reducing pressure on the city grid at peak demand;
– Reducing annual carbon dioxide and atmospheric emissions by hundreds of tonnes, in line with ISO 14001 environmental management requirements;
– Reducing emergency diesel-generator wear and associated noise and air pollution in dense urban surroundings;
– Providing a model for hospital accreditation indicators covering safety, energy management and green hospitals.
The minister concluded by presenting commemorative awards to the project's pioneers, benefactors and implementation team.
