The development of workplace sport and regular physical activity in industrial, administrative and workshop settings has been emphasized as a way to improve mental health, increase occupational safety and reduce social harm at work.
According to the Health, Safety and Environment news outlet, Dr. Mohsen Davoudi, a cardiovascular exercise physiology specialist and associate professor at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, said regular physical activity is among the most effective scientifically supported approaches to preventing drug use, reducing occupational stress and improving community mental health.
He explained that exercise increases endorphin and serotonin release and regulates dopamine, helping improve mood, reduce anxiety and build psychological resilience. It therefore plays an important role in managing the pressures of work and daily life.
Emphasizing adolescents and young adults, Dr. Davoudi said regular exercise can provide a healthy alternative to high-risk behavior. By strengthening self-confidence, increasing social interaction and reducing isolation, it can reduce the likelihood of tobacco and psychoactive substance use.
He added that scientific studies indicate people who undertake moderate physical activity three to four times a week, for about an hour per session, tend to enjoy better physical and mental health and face a lower likelihood of social harm.
The Shiraz University faculty member described exercise as a complementary tool in addiction treatment and rehabilitation. Regular activity, through its effects on nervous-system function, craving and brain function, may help reduce relapse.
He also identified sports infrastructure in workplaces, schools, neighborhoods and public spaces as necessary for social health. Promoting community sport and organizational health programs can improve productivity, reduce burnout and strengthen a culture of safety.
